MT3000L MicroLED Transfer System
Toray Engineering Co., Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; CEO & COO: Takashi Iwade; hereinafter “Toray Engineering”) has developed the MT3000L high-efficiency microLED transfer system. Sales will commence in December.
This system is used in the existing manufacturing process for microLED displays. It achieves a transfer speed that is approximately twice as fast as conventional transfer systems, the highest speed in the industry. It also enables high-speed transfer to 2.5-generation substrate sizes*1 for the first time in the industry, expanding the range of display sizes that can be manufactured efficiently.
Toray Engineering will propose MT3000L to manufacturers of microLED displays and aim to achieve orders amounting to 800 million yen in FY2023 and 1.5 billion yen in FY2025.
MicroLED displays are gaining attention as environmentally friendly displays because they do not require backlights and thus consume little electricity. They also have advantages such as offering clear pictures due to their high contrast ratio, and are thus expected to become the next-generation display. However, the transfer of microLED chips is time-consuming due to the use of a large number of microscopic LEDs of tens of square micrometers, and removing defective chips—which are invariably contained in a certain percentage—and re-transferring is both time-consuming and costly. These are issues that need to be addressed in order to mass-produce microLED displays.
Until now, Toray Engineering has pioneered the development and proposal of a new integrated process that performs high-precision identification and removal of defective chips and selectively transfers only good chips at high speed through the RAP-LLO® series of microLED transfer systems.
MT3000L is a system that contributes to higher efficiency in current mainstream processes*2. Toray Engineering is focusing on promoting efficiency improvements in extensions of existing processes that are needed in the industry in addition to the new high-efficiency processes that it proposes through the RAP-LLO® series of microLED transfer systems. MT3000L achieves a transfer speed that is approximately twice as fast as Toray Engineering’s conventional transfer systems that are widely used in the industry by applying various elemental technologies cultivated in semiconductor packaging equipment. Furthermore, Toray Engineering has succeeded in expanding the range of display sizes that can be efficiently manufactured by applying the high-speed, high-precision positioning technology for large substrates that it has cultivated in the FPD manufacturing equipment business, enabling transfer to 2.5-generation substrate sizes.
The Toray Engineering Group will contribute to the spread of environmentally friendly products in society by promoting the development and deployment of efficient manufacturing technologies for microLED displays with low electricity consumption, thus contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
Toray Engineering provides solutions for solving all kinds of issues in manufacturing by using its technologies, engineering, and know-how.
